The Passion of Joan of Arc (Voices of Light Ver.)
Carl Dryer's legendary silent classic with Richard Einhorn's transcendental score. Initially a piece inspired by Joan of Arc, this eerily powerful mix of opera & oratorio features a libretto of Latin/Italian/Old & Middle French, sourced from “a pastiche of writings by female mystics of the Middle Ages, including Joan herself, the voices of the choir echoing the voices that spurred Joan on in her quest to unite France.” (DeFreitas, 2008). While Dryer never officially designated a score, Voices of Light stands as one of, if not the, most powerful and popular accompaniment to date.
A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she’d spoken to God, Jeanne d’Arc is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.Drama | FrancePT1H22MNot Rated2025-07-07Maria Falconetti
